According to the Vedic tradition, the knowledge of life was originally passed from Shiva in the form of Dakshinamurti to the original rishis who passed it to their sons. As the story goes, Veda Vyasa divided the Vedas into 4 so that they could be taught via a succession of Teacher/Student rather than Father/Son. Adi Shankara came at a time when the knowledge of life was muddied and confused. He established 4 mutts (ashrams) in the 4 corners of India to preserve the Vedic tradition. Since all our priests come from the Shankaracharya's tradition, he is honored on Guru Poornima. Shankara had 4 students, one of which was named Trotaka. Trotoka was known for his devotion rather than his intellect. One day, Shankara postponed the start of his lecture because Trotaka was finsihing some small task. The other devotees became angry at Trotaka. Trotaka was immersed in his task and while walking back to the group, full of devotion, composed this stotra spontaneously. The metre is called Trotaka and is not commonly found. There is one other hymn that is sung in this metre, part of the morning hymns sung for Vishnu called Sri Venkatesha Stotram. |
