Palani Temple - Ayurvedic Health Yagya
($65 for all ten days; August 17 - 26)
(includes daily Shiva Abishekam and Soma Yagya on 8/26)
We are fortunate to have the resources to be able to arrange for a long series of yagyas at this very famous temple in Tamil Nadu, South India. Sri Seetharam and our priests will spend ten days here performing special health oriented yagyas for our August program.
The temple is very ancient dating back to the first millenium, although various stories about this site are much older. The temple is dedicated to Subramanya, also known as Murugan. He's the brother of Ganesha and son of Shiva and Parvati. He is regarded as the divine general and represents the power and protection of the planet Mars.
This site is special because of an ancient siddhar by the name of Bogar who lived around 3000 BCE. He was a student of Agastiar, the father of Ayurvedic Medicine. According to his book, it was near the site of this temple that he saw that future generations would suffer from disease and he mixed 4,448 herbs into nine powerful medicines. Then he used those to construct an idol of Subramanya which sits in the temple to this day. Sage Bogar's samadhi (burial place) is under the main sanctum of this temple.
The yagyas performed here generally involve the pouring of milk and a sweet milk mixture called Pancha Amritam over the deity in order to extract the spiritual essence of the medicines.
