| The essence of traditional spiritual practices is repetition. In the performance of a lengthy yagya like Sahasra Chandi, the presense, power, and blessings of the goddess is invoked over and over. In the process our awareness is refined and purified, our karmas are eliminated, and we gain in spiritual and material power. Over time, the rhythmns and direction of our life experience changes into a more problem free, satisfying, and peaceful existence. The 700 verse Durga Saptashati (also known as Chandi Path) is a mantra of considerable power. In this yagya, 3 pundits in Varanasi, North India, will recite this text in its entirety every day for the next year. After the three recitations are complete, they will recite the 1008 names of Lalitha; the most beautiful and gentlest form of the goddess. The combination is one of great power and great softness. After every 110 recitations of Chandi Path and 110,000 recitations of Lalitha names, the pundits will perform a complete Chandi Maha Homa, in which the mantras of Chandi Path will be recited while offerings of ghee and other traditional items are made into the sacred yagya fire. The yagya ritual will conclude on Vasant Navaratri 2013; the nine nights for the Divine Mother.
