Our wonderful 14 day Shivaratri celebration is such a big event, afterwards, it is almost like starting a new year. So of course, since Ganesha is in charge of beginnings, we begin with a day of Ganesha yagyas on Monday, March 13. We follow that with a day of Lakshmi yagyas on Wednesday, March 15. Lakshmi brings abundance in all its many forms and after so many yagyas we are ready to ask for her blessings. Later that evening, on the 15th, our priests will go to a very old Ganesha temple for a full traditional abishekam where the temple murti is bathed in traditional offerings of milk and sandalpaste, etc. Then he is dressed in a new silk dhoti, decorated with fresh flower garlands and honored with elaborate pujas.
